Unions are trustworthy institutions, the authors of Bill C-377 would have the public believe otherwise though.

As usual ‘employer interests’ would have the public forget that you are the union.

Bill C-377 would make it mandatory for labour organizations such as unions, union pension and benefit plans, trust funds and so on, report excruciatingly detailed reports to Revenue Canada so that it can all be published on a Government website.

Bill C-377 is a blatant attack on unions meant to give significant advantage to employers in the labour relations process .

At the taxpayers’ expense.

Bill C-377 will be costly in the extreme for the government to administer.

There are more than 25,000 unions in Canada.  Envision the bureaucracy required to review, process and publish that many intricate reports.

The Bill, an amendment to the Income Tax Act titled “The Trade Union Regulation Act” will negatively have an impact on unions by:

• Increasing the expense to unions and their members;
• Decrease the amount of time available for union staff to be able to perform their real duties to their memberships;
• The information filed will be used, out of context, to attack and discredit unions by employer groups and associations dedicated to disempowering workers.

Why?  Who’s asking for this legislation?  If this is just about accountability to the Canada Revenue Agency then why isn’t this also directed at other nonprofit groups, churches, charities and associations?

It’s not to late.  Not all Tories support this bill yet.  Further, with the NDP making strong inroads, the Conservatives are nervous and sensitive to the rapidly changing political landscape.  Your voice can make the difference.
